Player Bio:
Brayan Hommy Rocchio (born January 13, 2001 in Caracas, Venezuela) is a Venezuelan professional baseball shortstop for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball (MLB). According to Ancestry.com, the name Rocchio is Italian: probably a habitational name from a minor place called Rocchia from Latin roccula ‘small stronghold or fort’ or a topographic name from the vocabulary word rocchia ‘bush shrub’.
Rocchio was signed as an international free agent by the Cleveland Indians in July 2017. He made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Indians in 2018. Rocchio was promoted to the Arizona League Indians after hitting .323 in 25 games for the DSL Indians. He had an even better season with the AZL Indians, hitting for a .343 batting average in 35 games. Across both leagues in his first professional season, Rocchio hit .335 in 60 games.
For his 2019 season, he played the full season with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in Low–A ball. He played in 69 games, hitting for a .250 batting average. He did not play a minor league game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The newly named Cleveland Guardians selected Rocchio to their 40-man roster on November 19, 2021. Rocchio was optioned to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers to begin the 2023 season.
On April 19, 2023, Rocchio was promoted to the major leagues for the first time. He did not see game action for the Guardians and was optioned back to Columbus the following day, becoming a phantom ballplayer. However, on May 16, 2023 Rocchio was again promoted to the major leagues after José Ramírez was placed on the bereavement list. He got his first major league hit on May 16th vs the White Sox on an infield single.

Is Brayan Rocchio’s family from Gallo Matese, Italy?
We do not have the information to confirm family origins to a particular town in Italy…
I am a Rocchio. My father’s side of the family is from Gallo Matese. My Dad’s ship was sunk by a German submarine on August 17, 1942 off the coast of French Guiana.
Three crewmen escaped and possibly made it to shore.
I would like to know Brayan’s family history for that reason
Now that it’s posted on our site, perhaps someone will give us more info…

Hope this page was helpful Thomas! We would also like to know more…
Hey Thomas, I’m a Rocchio as well and my dad came from the same town to the US in ’69. Curious to know what part of the country you’re in and if there is any relation. [email protected]
I am in Huntington, LI, New York
Why of course! Nassau and Suffolk Counties have significant Italian American ancestry as you’re aware. But did you know that the South American cities of Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires have many times more Italian descendants than anywhere in the US.
Same, my dad was from Gallo and came to the Bronx in ’69. Michelangelo Rocchio (73).
I worked from the Yankees for 7 years, excited to see Brayan in the show.
