playerbio

John Paul Loviglio (born May 30, 1956 in Freeport, Long Island, New York) is an American former professional baseball second baseman who played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1980), Chicago White Sox (1981–82), and Chicago Cubs (1983). His career with the Cubs was a total of one at-bat.

After graduating from East Islip HS in 1974, Loviglio attended Suffolk Community College due to an error by the admissions department at LIU Brooklyn. Despite attending classes for the entire fall, the professors admitted they had no clue who he was and had no record of him being on their class roster.

He wound up playing at Suffolk, where he was a freshman All-American. Upon the completion of his sophomore season, he was invited to a Philadelphia Phillies tryout at Eisenhower Park which led to him signing and being assigned to the Auburn Phillies of the New York Penn League.

Loviglio worked his way up the system and wound up being called up to the big leagues in 1980 – the season in which the Phillies won their first World Series in franchise history. He had the opportunity to play with players like Pete Rose, Steve Carlton and Larry Bowa, He appeared in 16 games that season, being used primarily as a pinch-runner in the late innings for guys like Greg Luzinski and scoring seven runs along the way.

In his only at-bat for the Chicago Cubs, Jay pinch-hit for pitcher Warren Brusstar, striking out against Fernando Valenzuela in the 7th inning. Valenzuela would strike out 8 other Cubs that day on route to a complete game 5-2 victory over the Cubs.

After his playing days, he began a minor league coaching/managing career in the Cubs organization from 1986 through 1991, including as the pitching coach for the Long Island Ducks.
