Image from JG-TC.com – At Sportsman’s Park on Sept. 28, 1952, Cubs outfielder Frank Baumholtz swings at the only pitch that Stan Musial threw for the Cardinals in his 22-year-career in St. Louis. The Cardinals catcher is Bill Sarni, and the umpire is Augie Guglielmo. Baumholtz was a lefthanded hitter who switched to the right side for his at-bat against Musial. He grounded the ball to third and reached base on an error.
Born in Waterbury, CT, Augie Guglielmo was a professional umpire for more than 20 years, and spent one full year as a National League umpire, in 1952, working a total of 154 games. He was the senior ump in the Triple-A International League from 1953 through '66.
Image from The Sporting News Archive: July 17, 1952 — Jackie Robinson, Brooklyn second baseman, kicked his glove in a rage over the decision of umpire Augie Guglielmo calling Reds infielder Eddie Pellagrini safe on a play at second base, in Cincinnati. The call was made during the ninth inning of the Reds-Dodgers game. At left ump Guglielmo is surrounded by Preacher Roe, Pee Wee Reese and Gil Hodges at right. Robinson was ejected from the game.
