Player Bio:
Michael Robert "Mickey" Morandini was born in the Pittsburgh area and was an MLB second baseman and coach who played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and Toronto Blue Jays.
His career highlights include selection as a 1995 National League (NL) All-Star, playing for the Phillies in the 1993 NL Championship Series and World Series, and appearing for the Cubs in the 1998 NL Division Series. He seemed to come up "big" in key moments, and also made one of the relatively few unassisted triple plays in baseball history after making a diving catch on 9/20/92 - see it here on YouTube.
"As a coach, Morandini has tried to stress the principles of hard work to his players. He was never a prolific home-run hitter, instead preferring to refer to himself as 'a fundamental guy.' 'I wasn't the strongest or the fastest,' Mickey said. 'I kind of had to work harder than everybody else. That's what I'm trying to instill in these kids -- repetition and hard work.'" - By Kevin Horan / MLB.com (August 21, 2008, 'Where are they now? Mickey Morandini')
