Player Bio:
Francis James Rosso (b. March 1, 1921 in Agawam, MA – d. January 26, 1980 in Springfield, MA) was a Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who pitched in two games for the New York Giants in 1944. He played in the minor leagues between 1939 and 1948, and after his playing career was a high school coach.
According to TSN on April 14, 1944 he was discharged from the U.S. Marines (BN) during World War II and broke into the big leagues on September 15, 1944, with the New York Giants. With a 0–0 record, Frank sported a 9.00 ERA pitching for a total of 4 innings over 2 games. Bucky Walters of the Cincinnati Reds hold the distinction of being the only player Rosso struck out. Frank was used as a pinch runner in his final MLB appearance on October 1st, at age 23.
He coached football, baseball and basketball at Westfield (MA) High School and was athletic director from 1956 until 1978 when poor health forced his retirement. He died at age 58 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MA on January 26, 1980 and is buried at St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery in West Springfield, MA.
