playerbio

Garton Orville del Savio (b. November 26, 1913 in Bronx, NY – d. November 9, 2006 in Blauvelt, NY) was an American shortstop in Major League Baseball who played four games in 1943 for the Philadelphia Phillies, collecting a single in 11 at bats and committing three errors.

Signed as a shortstop by the New York Yankees in 1934, he was unable to make the parent club due to the fact that Frankie Crosetti was locked in as the team's primary shortstop. He was eventually traded to the Cincinnati Reds where he came up through their system in the mid-1930s, playing for various teams in the Middle Atlantic League and the Southern Association. He was then traded to the Phillies.

After sitting out the 1942 season, Del Salvio made the Phillies roster after spring training and he made his Major League debut on April 24, 1943. After his brief stint in the majors, 4 games, del Savio was sent back down to the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League for the remainder of the 1943 season, where he appeared in 148 games and hit .240.

He enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II. His final season of professional baseball was in 1946, splitting time between the Chiefs and the Birmingham Barons of the Southern Association, hitting only .201.

Del Savio's obituary states that he was lifelong friends with Hank Sauer and that the two of them enlisted in the Coast Guard together during World War II.

After leaving baseball, Gar played some semi-pro ball in Brooklyn and after baseball was a supervisor for the N.Y. Dept. of Sanitation, and also worked for a surgical supply company. He died at age 92 in Blauvelt, New York
